For specialty finishing requirements, WADAL Plastics provides a range of secondary operations. Highlights of each service are included below, as well as examples of how each one has been applied to recent projects.
Sonic Welding and Spin welding/Assembly
The sonic welding process allows thermoplastic materials to be joined. The process is fast, economical, clean and requires no consumables.
Examples of sonically welded parts:
- Staged filter components for automotive fuel delivery system - two components molded in acetal are welded together on a semi-automatic welder equipped with a rotary table. (1,400,000 parts per year)
- Operator assembly for casement window - left and right covers are molded in a custom color. Assemblies are sonically welded, encapsulating several steel components including a worm gear, operator arm and gear assembly.
Additional types of assembly-related operations include snap-fits and loading of molded parts into magazines.
Heat Staking Heat staking uses heat and pressure to deform a plastic stud or boss to capture another part.
Example of heat staking process:
- Handle for casement operator - two parts are molded, a handle and knob. The knob is inserted into the end of the handle and a standing pin is deformed, allowing the knob to act as a "free wheeling" unit.
Our secondary machining operations include drilling and tapping. Application of drill and tap techniques:
- Hinge for commercial refrigeration unit - mounting holes are drilled and tapped.
- Head for pole pruner - molded hole for mounting screw is tapped.
- Handle for casement operator - operator handle is drilled and tapped; set screw is installed.
Decorating
We currently offer plating as a decorating option. Pad printing, hot stamping and painting are services under consideration and may be added in the future.
